About UsJVFW Post 6049 was chartered in 1946 and named in honor of John Martin Steele, Jr., United States Marine Corps. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on Christmas Eve 1941. He was assigned to the Marine contingent aboard the aircraft carrier Lexington. The Lexington became involved in the Battle of the Coral Sea with Japanese naval forces. On May 8, 1942 the Lexington was attacked and John Martin Steele Jr. was killed in action and the Lexington subsequently sank. Steele was the first resident of Grundy County to be killed in action in World War II.
